Hello, and welcome to Zonenrand - my blog on all things history.
I invite you to take a peak and start exploring and digging deeper. History is foremost the story and stories of us, our families, our ancestors who are all connected with the history we were taught in school.
The title of my site, Zonenrand, is a German term for the areas in West Germany that directly bordered the iron curtain. Through this blog I am trying to explore the uniqueness of growing up in that area, and how the division of Germany shaped not only the political, economic and social development of the two countries but perhaps even more so influenced and shaped the lives of the people living in the Zonenrand. Even though the site is set up in English, I especially encourage my German friends to share their stories.
Obviously, this blog/website is a work in progress - especially since I am new to this entire endeavor. I fully anticipate a rough road ahead, with lots of things to learn. With that said, I wanted to create a space where I can explore and expand my interest in history, as well as gain experience in writing online and conveying my ideas on various historic subjects, and exchange ideas and conversations about our own history.
After all, history is who we are.
